SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Building fees are going up in Southaven for the first time since the 1980s.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1krFiq6 ) the increase approved by the Board of Aldermen is less than was recommended in the 2012 International Building Code the city recently adopted.

Planning and building director Whitney Choat-Cook says fees will increase about 25 percent on building permits for residential and commercial construction.

For 2013, the city collected $521,791 in fees, which are based, in part, on square footage. For example, a permit for a 2,400-square-foot home cost $444 last year. The increase will raise that to $655.
