MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - The Nassau County police department says about 10 percent of its police force is expected to retire next year.

The agency says about 250 officers are expected to leave. It currently has 2,257 members.

Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter tells Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1HR8OhB ) that 55 to 65 percent of the police force is eligible to retire.

The department will keep up with the turnover by ramping up hiring.

Officers are eligible to retire after 20 years.
