PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) - A woman hit her dog multiple times with a shovel to get it away from her 4-year-old grandson.

Pasco County Sheriff’s officials say the Rottweiler mix bit the boy Sunday afternoon at the home in Port Richey. The child was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries.

Deputies say the woman hit the dog until it let her grandson go.

Pasco Animal Control took custody of the dog. The sheriff’s office says the dog is being held under a rabies quarantine for 10 days.
