MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) - A man who allegedly shot and killed a woman last week in the southern New Jersey home where they both lived has made his initial court appearance.

Joseph Morrison, of Mays Landing, faces murder and weapons charges in the death of 52-year-old Debra Mason. He did not enter a plea at Monday’s hearing and remains jailed on $1 million cash bail.

The Press of Atlantic City (https://bit.ly/1HSMF2t) reports that the 62-year-old Morrison told the judge that his family is working on getting him a lawyer.

Atlantic County prosecutors say Mason died Wednesday night after she was shot in the chest at the couple’s Sears Avenue home. Officers had responded there after someone called 911 to report a shooting.

No one else was injured in the shooting.
