BALTIMORE (AP) - The gang member who prosecutors say dealt drugs and impregnated four guards while incarcerated at a Baltimore jail has taken the stand to testify against his co-defendants.

Prosecutors say Tavon White oversaw a drug smuggling operating inside the Baltimore City Detention Center and used contraband cellphones to direct gang activity on the streets. He took the stand Monday to testify against five corrections officers, one kitchen worker and two inmates who authorities say helped White run the operation.

Prosecutors played a recording of a phone call between White and a corrections officer in which White says of his position inside the jail, “I am the law.”

White’s testimony is expected to last several days. He’s testifying as part of a plea deal that gave him a reduced sentence.
