STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Statesville police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found after they responded to an assault report.

Multiple media outlets reported officers were called to a home around 12:30 a.m. Sunday by a man who said two men who had broken in and attacked him.

Police who searched the house for possible suspects found the body of Luis Rene Mendoza, 46, of Statesville.

“It was obvious he’d been involved in an assault, but there were no obvious signs of a gunshot or stab wound,” said Capt. David Onley of the Statesville Police Department.

An autopsy was scheduled Monday to determine how Mendoza died, Onley said.

The man who called police, William Wesley Bullin of Statesville, is being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Marcellus Anthony Brown Jr.,27, of Statesville was arrested Sunday afternoon and is being held in the Iredell County jail on a murder charged.

It was not clear if he has an attorney.

Onley said investigators if Mendoza’s death and the assault on Bullin are connected.
