CHICAGO (AP) - Eight people have been charged with distributing heroin in the Chicago area for a Mexican drug cartel.

Two Aurora men, including the alleged cell leader, were arrested yesterday in southeast Oklahoma. Three others from northern Illinois were arrested in the Chicago area.

Police issued warrants for three other people, including one believed to be in Mexico, and conducted searches at three homes and one business.

Seven of the eight defendants are charged with conspiring to possess and distribute a kilogram or more of heroin. They each face up to life in prison and a $10 million fine.

A criminal complaint says the cell leader worked with various sources to import heroin and cocaine from Mexico to Illinois. The complaint says drugs were stored in Aurora and Batavia warehouses and the operation benefited the Guerrero Unidos cartel.
