ROGERS, Ark. (AP) - Officials say about 16 people have been taken to hospitals following an ammonia leak at the Tyson Foods Chick-n-Quick plant in Rogers.

Fire Department Capt. Dennis Thurman says the leak occurred Wednesday. Thurman says the leak was contained inside the building and there was no threat to the public.

Fire Chief Tom Jenkins says one patient was unconscious when firefighters arrived on the scene and others suffered from respiratory problems.

In a statement, Tyson says contractors were performing maintenance on the facility’s roof and a small amount of ammonia odor was pulled into the plant through the air conditioning system. The statement says that as a precaution about 250 Tyson employees were evacuated.

The fire department is urging local residents to avoid the area around the plant.
