PHOENIX (AP) - A Chandler woman who left her young son in a hot car while shopping last April was sentenced Wednesday to a year of probation.

Maria Theresa Pio, 39, originally was charged with child abuse but pleaded guilty in November to endangerment.

A bystander heard her 1-year-old child crying in the car on April 12. The boy was sweating profusely inside the car, which wasn’t running.

Responders removed the infant from the vehicle. The boy was released to his father after being treated at a hospital.

Police said the interior temperature of the vehicle was measured at 124 degrees, and the infant car seat at 113 degrees.

They say surveillance video showed Pio, a mother of four, was shopping at a grocery store in Tempe for about 30 minutes.

Pio said at a court hearing Wednesday that she was “very sorry” about what happened and hopes her case can prevent someone else from making the same mistake.

“My child didn’t die and I’m so grateful,” Pio said.
