ANACORTES, Wash. (AP) - Acting on a tip, police in Anacortes, Washington, have pulled a 1-year-old baby from a dirty, unheated garage where officers say he had been living with his mother and her boyfriend.

Police arrested the couple last weekend for investigation of criminal mistreatment and heroin possession.

KOMO-TV reports (https://is.gd/tg4uSf ) that Police Chief Bonnie Bowers said officers found four adults, all seemingly under the influence of heroin.

The child was in a small playpen with items piled inside and on top of him. Bowers says the baby was taken to a hospital, warmed and fed and then placed with a foster family.

Police say the mother and her boyfriend had been living in the Portland area but relocated to Anacortes about two months ago.

Bowers says the baby was being monitored by Oregon’s Child Protective Services because of ongoing medical issues. The mother told officers she moved to Washington because she wanted to get a second opinion about the baby’s medical issues.
