BELOIT, Wis. (AP) - Beloit College is planning a memorial ceremony for graduate Luke Somers, a photojournalist who was killed in Yemen during a U.S. rescue attempt against his captors.

The ceremony is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Eaton Chapel.

Somers, 33, was a member of the graduating class of 2008 and earned a bachelor’s degree in creative writing. He was working as a freelance photojournalist in Yemen when he was captured by an affiliate group from al-Qaida in September 2013.

The Beloit Daily News reports the remembrance event is being organized by faculty, staff and alumni at the college.
