PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee has ordered Rhode Island state flags to fly at half-staff to honor the memory of former state Sen. Lila Sapinsley.

Sapinsley died Tuesday at age 92. Chafee ordered flags to half-staff on Friday from sunrise to sunset.

She was the first woman to hold a leadership post in the General Assembly, becoming minority leader as a Republican in 1974.

She ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1984.

Sapinsley served as a mentor and friend to many Rhode Island politicians, including Chafee and incoming Gov. Gina Raimondo.
