CHICAGO (AP) - Former GOP Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar says late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka had a flair that drew attention to her position and her office.

Topinka died early Wednesday after suffering a stroke.

Edgar says Topinka had unmatched positive energy and attitude. He says she “could be tough when she had to be tough” and when she decided to do something you couldn’t change her mind.

Edgar also is a Republican. He says Topinka’s support of immigration reform and gay marriage “was important for the party to have someone viewed as a leader in office.”
