Planned Parenthood has parents of students at one California high school up in arms about a recent lesson plan that teaches, among other things, that those unhappy with their gender can simply choose another.

Materials distributed by Planned Parenthood staffers during a sex-ed course at Acalanes High School in Lafayette demonstrate the ease with which gender identity can be changed by using a gingerbread image, dubbed “The Genderbread Person,” Fox News reported.

Other teachings during the class: A checklist distributed among students to help them discern whether they’re “ready for sex,” and another worksheet that explains how to provide and obtain consent for sex, Fox News reported.

The checklist — “Sex Check! Are You Ready for Sex?” — asked the students to tell whether they had lubricants and condoms, while the other worksheet on obtaining consent suggested possible statements could include the question, “Is it OK if I take my pants off?”

But the “genderbread” person has evoked especial parental ire, with its explicit terminology and explanations of the likes of “genderqueer” versus “androgynous” versus “interest,” Fox News reported. It also asked the students to identify themselves as “agender,” “bigender,” or something called “two spirit.”

Parents say they weren’t given a heads-up of the program before Planned Parenthood employees came into the school to teach it, Fox News reported.

“[Parents] are very concerned,” said Brad Dacus, the president of the Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal organization that’s working with the parents on a legal argument to the school class, Fox News reported. “Planned Parenthood is not exactly the best when it comes to putting young people first. They get more grants from the promiscuity of children. The material they have provided was material that mirrored their agenda.”

Parents of ninth-graders were the first to raise concerns, after one student recounted how an instructor tossed a model of female reproductive organs to a classmate and others said they felt pressured into having sex, due to the teachings, Fox News reported.

School district officials specified the class was being taught by Planned Parenthood staff from Walnut Creek. Mr. Dacus said the school may have violated notification laws that require parents not only be given a heads-up of the sex ed course, but also a chance to sign off on surveys to their children, Fox News reported.
