LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - A Red Springs man who was shot and wounded after two men broke into his home returned fire, killing one of the intruders.

Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey says it happened about 8:40 a.m. Monday when 36-year-old Sanford Hardin got a call from his wife about a suspicious vehicle near their house.

When Hardin approached the vehicle, a boy in it sped off. Hardin found two masked men in the house. One pulled a gun and shot Hardin in the shoulder. Hardin returned fire, killing one man while the second ran off.

The sheriff identified the dead man as 28-year-old Randal Dwight Hardin Jr., of Parkton, a distant relative of Sanford Hardin.

Sanford Hardin was treated and released from a hospital. No arrests have been made.
