SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore has fired a jail guard who put a handcuffed inmate in a neck hold to force him to the floor.

A spokeswoman tells U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1B3Y2Qm ) that the guard was dismissed last week.

Deputy Sam Knight was suspended without pay in August for using improper force at the George F. Bailey Detention Facility.

He appealed and in October the county Civil Service Commission reversed the discipline and awarded the seven-year veteran back pay with interest.

The sheriff is suing the commission to overturn that decision, arguing that it ignored laws designed to protect the public from rogue employees.

U-T San Diego says commission Executive Officer Todd Adams and attorneys for Knight declined to comment.
