CINCINNATI (AP) - Gift cards for the Cincinnati streetcar system that’s still under construction went on sale the same day a city council committee was told that much of the project’s $9.7 million construction contingency fund has been spent.

The funding news came Tuesday with a little more than a third of the $148 project completed and the line not scheduled to begin running until September 2016.

Streetcar executive John Deatrick told the transportation committee on Tuesday that $4.4 million of the fund for cost overruns and surprise expenses has been spent and expenses of another $2.9 million are pending. The Cincinnati Enquirer (https://cin.ci/1AbMYzD ) reports that another $2.2 million probably will be needed, leaving less than $100,000 in the fund.

The commemorative gift cards are available in amounts of $25, $50 and $100.
