YEMASSEE, S.C. (AP) - The Yemassee mayor and the fire chief want the State Law Enforcement Division to lead the investigation into the attempted arson of the town hall and fire station.

Authorities tell The Island Packet of Hilton Head (https://bit.ly/1wcQuuh) that two former volunteer firefighters are charged with attempted murder and arson in the Nov. 18 incident. Police say the two were feuding with a firefighter who was inside at the time. The firefighter and a town clerk escaped without injury.

Mayor Jerry Cook and Fire Chief Paul Holmes want the investigation headed by SLED. Cook says that would avoid any conflict of interest that could arise with the town police in charge.

Police Chief Jack Hagy says he will speak with the officials but is confident of his department’s ability to investigate.
