CENTER MORICHES, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a horse standing in the roadway was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on Long Island.

It happened at 2:50 a.m. Thursday half mile west of Exit 59 on the eastbound side of Sunrise Highway in Center Moriches.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer remained at the scene and was not injured.

Two other horses that were seen in the area of the crash remain missing.

The owner of the horses from the “Double ‘D’ Bar Ranch” in Manorville was contacted. It’s not clear how the horses escaped.

Anyone with information about the incident or the missing horses is asked to call 911.
