PHOENIX (AP) - Cochise and Pima counties have finished recounts of nearly 220,000 votes cast in the too-close-to-call race between Democratic Rep. Ron Barber and Republican Martha McSally.

Cochise County Elections Director Katie Howard says the machine recount of about 36,000 ballots was completed Wednesday. The total ballot count changed by 1 vote.

A hand count of 5 percent of precincts to verify machine count accuracy is set for Friday.

Pima County spokesman Mark Evans says election workers also finished counting ballots cast in their part of Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District on Wednesday. There were nearly 183,000 votes there. Pima County’s verification hand count is set for Monday.

The final results won’t be released until they are turned over to a judge next week for certification.

McSally leads Barber by 161 votes.
