PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona officials say the state will receive $20 million in federal funds to enhance early childhood education.

The state Department of Education announced Wednesday that the grants have been awarded as part of the Preschool Development Grant program.

Officials say the funds will go toward ensuring preschool programs are more accessible to children in at-risk communities throughout the state.

Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal says preschool education can improve the chances of success for more vulnerable children.

The U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services jointly oversee the grant program.
