MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - A provision in a federal spending bill includes a call for naming a building at southwestern Illinois’ Scott Air Force Base in honor of a late U.S. senator.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois says the measure introduced Tuesday in the House would direct the Air Force’s chief to name a facility at Scott for Alan Dixon.

Dixon was 86 when he died in July. The Illinois Democrat’s political career spanned more than 40 years. He was in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 1993 and chaired a subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee.

Durbin is chairman of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He says protecting the Scott air base “was always one of Alan Dixon’s highest priorities.”
