GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A Galveston man has been sentenced to life in prison in the 2001 killing of the father of his girlfriend’s child.

The Galveston County Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1vSRcNs ) 40-year-old Jose Lopez was convicted of capital murder on Wednesday. Prosecutors say Lopez paid $10,000 to two men who gunned down Mario Espinoza in June 2001.

Lopez fled the country in 2001 to live with family in Mexico after being questioned in the killing. He was extradited to Galveston in March with the condition that he wouldn’t face the death penalty.

Lopez’s attorney says he will appeal the decision.
