GRETNA, La. (AP) - Gretna residents who want to have a garage or estate sale will have to do it on a weekend.

The Gretna City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Wednesday that restricts the days people can sell personal items from their homes.

The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1yD5ezQ ) the council acted after receiving complaints about people having garage sales that lasted as long as a week.

The changes were criticized by two residents who complained that not everyone has Saturday and Sunday off and that people often need to hold garage sales quickly because of emergencies.

“I don’t see why you have to take away the freedom of people who want to have a garage sale on a Thursday or a Friday,” resident Laurie Ledet said.

Mayor Belinda Constant and council members responded that some residents don’t like the idea of outsiders coming into their neighborhoods during the week, when the residents are less likely to be around.

City Attorney Mark Morgan said the initial idea was to broaden the language in the existing law to include estate sales and other names for garage sales and to set limits that would allow the city to issue citations against people holding marathon sales.

He said officials then decided to restrict the sales to weekends so as to reduce the number of days on which outsiders would be legitimately seen walking through neighborhoods carrying household items.

Morgan said that while not everyone will agree with the change, the consensus among officials is that the weekend is the safest time to hold garage sales.

The $25 fee and limit of two sales per year at an address remain unchanged.
