LARGO, Fla. (AP) - A judge sentenced a 20-year-old man to two life sentences after prosecutors used a letter and a map they say he created which led police to a handgun used to kill a commercial fisherman in Pinellas County.

Cody Dials was convicted by jurors and sentenced for the May 2012 first-degree murder of 39-year-old David Rhea and for robbing Rhea’s mother.

The Tampa Bay Times (https://bit.ly/1wC4tvZ ) reports that key evidence in the trial is a letter Dials wrote which included a map that led to the handgun. He was trying to convince a fellow inmate to implicate one of his defendants in the crime. Prosecutors told jurors that Dials “wrote you a letter telling you how he committed this homicide.”

Co-defendant Randy White was sentenced to 25 years in April.
