MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) - McComb Mayor Whitney Rawlings broke a tie vote to a reject a $773,800 bids for a new fire station - more than double what the city had budgeted.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/13bt5ii ) the city had set aside $350,000 for a 4,025-square foot fire station in east McComb.

“I understand the need for a fire station is a great need there,”?Rawlings said after voting Tuesday to reject the bid and breaking a 3-3 tie among the board of selectmen.

“We’re just trying to build something we can afford to build,” Rawlings said,

Fire Chief Stephen Adams said he and architect Steve Cox tried to keep costs down.

“We did work to keep the cost down,”?Cox said.

“I told this board when we first started working on this I’m not a builder, but I’d try to keep it as efficient as I could,”?Adams said Tuesday. “I felt like I have done this.

“From what I saw from those comparisons - and I’m talking about all across the state - they were from $1 million to $3.7 million for a fire station,” Adams said. “Comparing it to that, it’s a pretty reasonable plan.”

Rawlings said another city fire station is 3,200 square feet and is functional, with a kitchen, living quarters and a bay for trucks.

Rawlings said on top of the $773,800 estimate, the station would need furnishing, and the old station needs to be demolished.

Rawlings proposed building a station with a “smaller footprint” for around $500,000.

Adams said the old station has been closed for eight months.?Even if the board accepted the $773,800 bid, Adams said the new station would not be operational for about a year. Rejecting the bids adds to the delay, he said.
