ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Ballet’s “Nutcracker” returns for its 55th season.

The production features the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Georgia Youth Choir, kicking off its holiday show on Thursday at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. The show runs through Dec. 28.

Each show will be set in a Moorish decor with a series of props, including 20 pounds of snow and a 38-foot Christmas tree.

The Atlanta Ballet expects to invite more than 200 area school children to perform alongside 23 professional company members and four company apprentices.

“Nutcracker” was introduced by the Atlanta Ballet in 1959, performing George Balanchine’s version of the tale. In that year, the company was the only one outside of the New York City Ballet that was allowed to perform the signature piece.
