PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - The Petersburg City Council has voted to close the city jail and transfer its approximately 200 inmates to the Riverside Regional Jail.

The 4-3 vote late Tuesday night caught Petersburg Sheriff Vanessa Crawford by surprise. According to media reports, the proposal was not on the agenda but was raised by council member Kenneth Pritchett.

Crawford said she learned about it from text messages from people at the meeting. She said she was unhappy about being left out of the decision-making process.

The closure is expected to save the city about $1.1 million a year. Most of the 61 deputy sheriffs will lose their jobs, although Crawford says she has been told that some might be hired at Riverside.
