PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The storefront location of a food co-op in Maine’s largest city is officially open after a year-long campaign.

Portland officials hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting for the Portland Food Co-op on Wednesday. The co-op has more than 2,300 members, a nearly six-fold increase from a year ago when the drive to open a storefront began. The members each gave $100 to the co-op, which makes them part owners with a voice in its future.

The facility specializes in local and organic foods and household products. The co-op is located on Congress Street and hosted a soft opening about three weeks ago.
