SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego has its first female City Council president after Councilwoman Sherri Lightner ousted Councilman Todd Gloria.

Lightner earned the title with a 7-2 vote on Wednesday, with Gloria and one other councilman the only ones opposing.

U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1BzR1di ) reports it’s not clear what led the council to support Lightner over Gloria, who had served as president since 2012 and served as interim mayor after Bob Filner was driven out by a sexual harassment scandal.

Lightner will now take over as interim mayor if Mayor Kevin Faulconer should step down for any reason.

The 64-year-old Lightner graduated San Diego’s Crawford High School and UC San Diego.

She was president of the La Jolla Town Council before joining the San Diego City Council in 2008.
