HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A Hardeeville police officer is back on the job after being cleared by the State Law Enforcement Division of any criminal wrongdoing in using his handcuffs on his wife during a domestic dispute.

Police Chief Sam Woodward tells The Island Packet of Hilton Head (https://bit.ly/1qzONqa ) that SLED found no criminal wrongdoing when Lt. Steve Thomas used his handcuffs to restrain his wife during an argument at their home in September.

A report on the incident said Thomas’ wife was on medication and the officer used the handcuffs to prevent her from harming herself.

Prosecutor Thomas Scott III says he thinks Thomas was justified and agreed no crime occurred.

Thomas had been placed on paid administrative leave. SLED finished its investigation earlier this month.
