ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) - Off-road vehicles driven on the Killpecker Sand Dunes in western Wyoming would need to be fitted with safety flags under rules proposed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Also, speeds would be limited to 15 miles an hour near access roads and glass containers would be banned from the dunes.

The BLM is seeking public comments on the proposed rules until Feb. 9.

The dunes 25 miles north of Rock Springs are a popular off-roading spot. The off-roading portion of the dunes covers more than 16 square miles.

Safety flags improve a vehicle’s visibility in rugged terrain. Under the proposed rules, safety flags would need to be mounted on a mast 8 above the ground.
