SALEM, Va. (AP) - Juan Thornhill accounted for 199 yards, ran for two touchdowns and threw for one Saturday, leading Altavista to a 22-20 victory against Essex and a repeat as VHSL Group 1A state champions.

Thornhill ran for 99 yards, including a 40-yard burst with 7:32 remaining. His 2-point conversion run gave the Colonels (15-0) a 22-14 lead. Thornhill also threw a 24-yard scoring pass to Demetrius Johnson.

The Trojans (12-3) scored on Sterling Hammond’s 44-yard touchdown reception from Dominek Broaddus to cut the deficit to two points with 3:01 remaining. Leo Gaskins was stopped on the subsequent 2-point attempt and Altavista milked the final 3 minutes off the clock.

Malik Martin added an 18-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter for Essex that tied the score at 14-all.
