MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Forget about the sleigh and reindeer. In North Dakota, Santa Claus uses a tractor - or at least that’s what a Minot grandpa believes.

Marlin Schiele has decorated a 1947 Farmall tractor and set it in his front yard; Santa sits in the driver’s seat and the tractor has lights all over.

Schiele has two grandchildren who will be visiting him from San Diego for Christmas and he thought the display “would be a good gesture.”

“I told myself I’d do it up with lights and Santa Claus on top,” he told the Minot Daily News (https://bit.ly/1wteWq9 ). “I thought I’d just go all out on this one. It’s kind of fun.”

Schiele purchased the tractor at an auction last fall. He said he has enjoyed restoring old vehicles for “as long as I can remember” and buying the Farmall seemed like a good idea.

The holiday display has been an attention-getter. A woman recently asked Schiele if he would allow her 3-year-old son to be photographed with the tractor. He agreed.

“He sat on the tire on the back,” said Schiele. “I was looking out the window and there was a big old smile from ear to ear. He waved at me.”

Schiele and his wife, Marilyn, said they are hoping for the same reaction when their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, ages 3 and 7, arrive in Minot in the upcoming days.
