NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a retired police officer who was working as a security guard at a northern New Jersey business shot and critically wounded an armed person who was walking toward him.

Newark police tell NJ.com (https://bit.ly/1xeMsnb) that the shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Two people armed with handguns were in a pickup truck that pulled up to the guard’s vehicle. One person got out of the pickup and approached the guard, who shot the person several times.

The other person in the pickup drove off immediately after the shooting occurred and remains at large. It wasn’t known if that person was also wounded.

The guard, a former Union City police officer, was not injured. His name was not disclosed.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
