LOS LUNAS, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a suspect who barricaded himself inside his vehicle on an interstate near Los Lunas following a police pursuit has been shot.

New Mexico State Police say a man who allegedly fled an attempted traffic stop early Saturday morning has been flown to an Albuquerque hospital with gunshot wounds.

The suspect’s condition is unknown.

Police say the suspect took off in his truck and led officers on a chase onto I-25 just south of Los Lunas.

Officers used spike strips to halt the vehicle. The suspect then remained inside the truck in a standoff with authorities for nearly eight hours.

According to State Police, he was shot by an officer when he posed a threat to public safety.

Officials say I-25 has been closed in both directions for several hours.
