ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A giveaway of surplus furniture from an old school building in Vinton turned out to be pretty popular.

Roanoke County spokeswoman Amy Whittaker says all of the free items from the former William Byrd school were claimed within minutes of the event’s opening Saturday. Items were offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Roanoke Times (https://bit.ly/1Aunb5Q) reports the giveaway of chairs, desks, tables and cabinets had been scheduled to run all day Saturday and Sunday.
