OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A huge wave knocked five people off a jetty near the Camp Pendleton Marine base, injuring three including a member of the Air Force who was seriously hurt.

Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence tells U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1qKGM1O) eight people had hiked onto the rocks Saturday when the crashing wave knocked down five.

Lawrence says someone passing on personal watercraft picked up the Air Force member, who had fallen down over large boulders and into the harbor’s turning basin.

He was taken to a fuel dock where police and paramedics were waiting and was flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Lawrence said he had major injuries but gave no further details.

Camp Pendleton emergency crews treated the other two injured and helped the others to safety.
