BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Boise Mayor Dave Bieter is weighing three finalists as he decides who to nominate for Boise’s chief of police.

Bieter spokesman Mike Journee tells the Idaho Statesman (https://goo.gl/zTfpd9 ) that the mayor plans to announce the nomination by early January though the decision could come before the holidays.

The City Council must confirm his choice.

The three finalists include Boise deputy chief Bill Bones; Maj. Richard Zapal, a commander with Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department in Georgia; and Raul Munguia, assistant chief for Austin Police Department in Texas.

Mike Masterson is retiring next month after a decade as the city’s top cop.
