LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A Calcasieu Parish police juror has died.

A news release from the police jury says James Mayo, 52, died Friday night, apparently in his sleep.

Mayo, a Democrat, represented parts of northeast Lake Charles and Moss Bluff on the 15-member body. He was first elected in 2011 and had served as vice president in 2013.

An 18-year-employee of the city of Lake Charles, Mayo served as an administrative assistant to the mayor before becoming assistant director of the Lake Charles Civic Center.

Police Juror Tony Guillory says he worked with Mayo to improve parish services, including recreation.

The police jury must fill the vacancy within 20 days.

Mayo was an active Catholic layman and graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana.
