CHICAGO (AP) - Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s re-election bid has received the backing of several Latino leaders, including his one-time rival for the job.

Gery Chico said Sunday that he’s endorsing Emanuel. He appeared at an event with other Latino business, community and political leaders at a Mexican candy store on the city’s West Side.

Emanuel defeated Chico in the 2011 mayoral race. Chico now is chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education, and says Emanuel is making positive changes in education.

Chico has said he thinks he can persuade his backers from 2011 to support Emanuel this time around.

Others endorsing Emanuel include U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Chicago Clerk Susana A. Mendoza.

Emanuel faces several challengers in the February election, including Chicago alderman Robert Fioretti and Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.
