FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Police in Fredericksburg have collected 60 guns in a unique give-back event.

Residents turned in the guns at the Fredericksburg police station Saturday.

The Free Lance-Star (https://bit.ly/1xi9wRM) reports the guns ranged from rusty rifles to a handgun the size of a cell phone. One participant dropped off several handguns in a shopping bag. Some guns were in working order and others were in rough shape.

The idea for the program came from Fredericksburg City Councilman Chuck Frye Jr., who has lost friends to gun violence.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe says a local philanthropist is making a $100 charitable donation for each gun. Bledsoe says the offer will remain in place for those who turn in guns over the next three months.
