McALLEN, Texas (AP) - Officials say an elected city commissioner in McAllen died of a heart attack after running in a marathon he helped create last year.

City officials said in a statement Sunday that Commissioner Scott Crane began the marathon but pulled out after feeling some discomfort. He went home but was later transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Crane was first elected in 2005 and described as an avid long-distance runner. He is credited with helping launch the McAllen Marathon.

His brother is U.S. District Judge Randy Crane.
