SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A Shreveport city employee has been arrested on charges that he stole city property worth almost $60,000

Cartrie Washington, 34, was booked into the city jail on a felony theft charge Friday, KTBS-TV reports (bit.ly/1zlEK92). Washington remained jailed Sunday and it’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Washington, a six-year city employee, came under criminal scrutiny after an internal audit of the city water and sewerage department found water meters and other metal parts weren’t accounted for.

Shreveport Police spokesman Cpl. Marcus Hinds says Washington sold the metal to a scrap business in Texas over several months. He also faces criminal charges in Texas relating to the sale of the property. Authorities say they recovered some items.
