BEND, Ore. (AP) - A transient who was arrested after police chase died Sunday night in the Deschutes County Jail at Bend.

Deputies said 31-year-old Edwin Burl Mays was a passenger in a car that tried to flee police.

KTVZ reports (https://bit.ly/1xkXNlC ) he was being booked into jail when he began showing signs of medical distress. Fire department medics responded but couldn’t save him.

The sheriff’s office says an autopsy will be conducted, but the death “appears to be the result of medical issues.”

Mays was being booked on charges of interfering with a police officer, menacing, giving false information, heroin possession and a parole violation.
