COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say two people are dead after an early morning fire at their Columbia home.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins tells local media outlets that the fire happened at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Officials say they found heavy smoke and flames coming from inside the house. Authorities say multiple space heaters are the preliminary cause of the fire.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 88-year-old Ned Woods, Sr., and 83-year-old Helen Woods both died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.

Officials say one firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but was treated and released.

The Columbia Fire Department is still investigating the incident.
