PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The new mayor of Providence will celebrate his inauguration with a party at the old Cranston Street Armory.

Jorge Elorza will be inaugurated as the 38th mayor of Providence on Jan. 5. He succeeds fellow Democrat Angel Taveras.

Several events are planned connected to the inauguration. Elorza is asking residents to take part in a “Day of Service” on Saturday, Jan. 3 by volunteering or donating canned goods to the Rhode Island Food Bank.

A party for children will be held on Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Providence Children’s Museum.

The events are free and open to the public, but tickets are required to attend the celebration at the armory, which will be held the evening of Jan. 5.

The armory is a landmark on the city’s West Side.
