BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A former Kutztown University football player has been sentenced to at least 22 months in prison in a fight at a fraternity party that critically injured a freshman.

Twenty-one-year-old Angel Cruz of Robesonia expressed remorse for his actions and apologized as he was sentenced Monday in Columbia County Court.

Cruz was originally charged with aggravated assault but pleaded guilty last month to simple assault and other counts.

Police and the university said a fight broke out when the players went to a closed fraternity party near the Bloomsburg University campus early Feb. 23.

Relatives of the victim, who was trying to break up the fight, said Cruz’s actions had “brutally injured a bright and vibrant young man.”

Cruz said he wishes “every” that he could take back his actions.
