LOS ANGELES (AP) - “Exodus: Gods and Kings” may not have had an opening weekend of biblical proportions, but its $24.1 million debut was enough to dethrone “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1” from its three week box office reign.

“Mockingjay” dropped to the second place spot with $12.7 million, bringing its domestic total to a staggering $276.9 million, which is still nearly $90 million shy of where “Catching Fire” was at the same point in the cycle.

Chris Rock’s comedy “Top Five,” which he wrote, directed and stars in, also had a healthy opening $6.9 million from just 979 locations, landing the film in the fourth place spot behind “Penguins of Madagascar” which took in $7.2 million.

“Big Hero 6” rounded out the top five with $6.1 million from its sixth weekend in theaters.

It was Paul Thomas Anderson’s stoner-noir “Inherent Vice,” though, which really impressed taking in $328,184 from five locations for a stunning $65,637 per-theater average. The film opens wide on Jan. 9.
