GREENCASTLE, Ind. (AP) - Prosecutors say federal agents have raided a west central Indiana sheriff’s office.

WTHI and the Greencastle Banner Graphic report agents removed several boxes from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in Greencastle, about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

The US Attorney’s office in Indianapolis confirms federal agents participated in the raid and that their investigation extended to Martinsville.

It wasn’t clear what agents were looking for. However, a federal judge sentenced former Putnam County Deputy Sheriff Terry Joe Smith to 14 months in prison this month after he was found guilty of two civil rights violations for allegedly using excessive force on two people he arrested. Smith’s attorney has said he will appeal his convictions.
